Mindfulness meditation otherwise known as Shamathat meditation is a technique in meditation through which calmness and harmony of the mind can be achieved. It distinguishes itself from other methods of meditation by its unique way of arriving at the center of  calmness, this method is believed to be a natural attribute of the mind.

Calmness of the mind is developed and fortified through mindfulness meditation.

The first important step to mindfulness meditation is finding a suitable environment. Sit in a place where the energy radiates the aura of sacredness and serenity and should be devoid of all forms of distractions. When a favorable environment has been secured, you can start your meditation. It is recommended that meditation should not be too lengthy  10 to 20 minutes of  meditation twice in a day (morning and evening) is great!

You can use a chair or a meditation zafu or gomden. Whichever one you are using make sure that the trunk of the body and spine are in an upright position to ensure a better flow of energy. Bending down can disrupt the flow of energy which can mar the thought process. This posture will help you stay awake and relaxed.

Your eyes can remain open but not moving about. In mindfulness meditation the gaze is always downward and at the same time  soft. Raising your gaze can bring distraction. In mindfulness meditation the attempt is to become aware of the mind and of what is happening inside of you.

You can use objects such as a stone to focus the mind but the best way of focusing the mind; is by using the breath. Breath relaxes the mind better than any other object. Feel your breath as you begin to meditate, but don’t force it. Just allow the air to flow in and out of your body.

During mindfulness meditation, you may be distracted by thoughts arising in your mind. The occasional thought coming into our mind is inevitable. The only way to deal with it is by letting the thought go and then refocus your mind again. For stubborn thoughts, try seeing the thought move further and further way from you, until you cannot see it any more.

Mindfulness meditation helps to discover the basic truth of our existence. You can easily discover who you are as an eternal being.

The advantage of Mindfulness meditation lies in the fact that it allows you to gain the benefit of meditation by just sitting down and doing nothing. It is also very simple and easy to practice.
